Issue 4: Sweat
Valet Issue 4 deals with the themes of work, sweat, and toil through the lens of classic men’s style. The 272-page tome houses original long-form articles on a number of subjects related to why and how we dress.
Through philosophical, historical, literary, and theological essays, we treat a litany of subjects, from how what we wear to work influences our perception of the world and our fellows’ perception of us, how transitioning in and out of our work uniform affects our psychology, and how even today, men’s traditional style is evolving for the better.
Our proverbial valet offers a view on how to find a decent watering hole when in new surrounds on a work trip, and we put his tips to the test on a night out in Tbilisi, recording the odyssey for posterity (and your reading pleasure).
Photo essays explore such topics as how the addition of a tie to any work uniform elevates it and confers respect on one's craft, why a gentleman oughtn’t ever to rush, and how to match your jacket and boutonnière. We also take a deep dive into a London institution and one of the greatest secondhand clothing shops in the world—Hornets of Kensington.
We speak to Nicholas Bowman-Scargill, the managing director of English luxury watchmaker Fears, about the history of watches and what makes or breaks a watch design; Maximilian Mogg introduces us to the intricacies of the Anglo-German cut; we speak to actor, writer, and broadcaster Stephen Fry about his tie collection and the joys of putting away childish things and behaving like a grown-up; and loads more.
We hope you enjoy this issue of Valet, and that it brings you as much joy in reading it as it did us in making it.
—Valet
What our readers say:
“The thing I respect about you is that you do things the treacherous way—refusing to purchase bogus followers to ‘prove’ that you’re popular, and putting in the time to turn out quality content, while earning one devotee at a time.”
Sonya Glyn, The Parisian Gentleman
“Thank you for sending Valet! It’s beautiful. The editor’s letter is perfection.”
Hannah Chamberlain, @SpiritedLA
“We are reading this first issue of Valet now. The whole team is impressed by your work and that of your team!”
Husbands Paris
“I was curious to read your publication but now I am absolutely desperate to. I love this sort of detail.”
Chris Modoo, Kit Blake
“‘You guys truly show a passion and expertise regarding your topics and I really love the historical references. It’s as if Evelyn Waugh and Graham Greene were doing the writing.”
Patrick Durkin, USA
“Valet is not a magazine about clothes, but a magazine about how and why and where clothes are worn. It gives a context to the sometimes superficial world of menswear. Excellent from start to finish.”
Andreas Klow, @flannels_and_tweed
“Valet is daringly and refreshingly long-form in a world that’s rapidly moving towards listicles. It’s the best demonstration of print media being alive and relevant, now and into the future. It’s presence goes beyond print. I particularly enjoy their once-in-a-blue moon short film releases on YouTube. I always look forward to their next delivery.”
Charles Yap, The Decorum
“I cannot rate Valet highly enough. I think the biggest compliment I can give is this: that it isn't just a magazine about menswear in its classic form, but a collection of stories, tales, interviews and fiction that inspire, all done to the highest standard of literature. There is so much depth to it and I would recommend it to everyone, especially in these trying times, where we all need a little bit of inspiration just to keep going.”
J.J.
“Valet carries the torch of classic menswear. Their content is at the top of their field, always interesting, and fantastically curated. My favourite menswear magazine.”
Kirby Allison, The hanger Project

As short a time as possible. These days, it's a slightly painful question, as many territories are affected by the pandemic and subsequent reductions in airfreight. Even so, it usually takes 7–10 days if you are in Europe and 10–20 days for everywhere else. It is, however, usually much quicker than this. Unfortunately, many of the delays to shipments outside Europe are caused by customs, which we cannot influence. We can always arrange for special delivery if it is required. Just get in touch with us at info@valetmagazine.co.
We are confident that you will. However, if it is not quite touching your fancy, before the second issue in your subscription is sent, get in touch with us at info@valetmagazine.co for your money back, no questions asked.
