Just a Touch

Just a Touch

‘A gentleman never rushes’, goes the dictum, and it is one that carries over all life’s endeavours, including our chosen sports and pastimes.

We see here, for instance, the gentleman rushing his shot. With every miss, his eagerness and impatience grow, along with the force and stress he applies to the ball.

He would do better to step back a moment and take measure of himself, to recognise that success rests not on these baser instincts, but on his overcoming them.

He relaxes his grip, feathers smoothly to keep the cue on the straight and narrow, and applies only the necessary force to urge the ball into the pocket.

Thus, a metaphor for life: every task or effort is better faced with patience, equanimity, and just a touch.
